Designing acceptable user registration processes for e-services

    Get PDF
User registration can have a serious impact on the success of online government services. Different services require different levels of identity assurance, and different registration processes are put in place to deliver them. But from the citizen’s perspective, these processes often require a disproportionate amount of effort, which reduces users’ acceptance. Typically, when sign-up to high-effort services is not mandatory, take-up is low; when it is compulsory, it causes resentment, and neither is desirable. Designers of services requiring registration currently have no way of assessing likely user acceptance at design time. We are introducing a tool that allows system designers to identify the impact of registration processes on different groups of users, in terms of workload and friction. Personas have been successfully applied to assist security designers, and we extend the concept with statistical properties, and introduce the Persona Group Calibration (PGC) exercise to calibrate the different personas for sensitivity to specific identity-related elements.peer-reviewe

[Poster] 15th International Conference on Human–Computer Interaction (HCI International 2013), Las Vegas (Nevada, USA), 21–26 July 2013Chats present accessibility problems for screen reader users. This work presents a prototype of an accessible chat for Mobile Devices (MD). The main aim of this research is to remove the accessibility barriers that screen reader users face when they use a chat in a MD. Thus, this prototype is based on the requirements which have been elicited considering background research and with the use of Software Engineering (SE) and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) methods as well as accessibility standards and guidelines. This research work has been partially supported by MA2VICMR (S2009/TIC-1542) and MULTIMEDICA (TIN2010-20644-C03-01)Publicad

SenToy and FantasyA: evaluating affective gaming

    Get PDF
Gaming is a highly relevant application area for Intelligent Agents and Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Computer games bring us a full set of new gaming experiences where synthetic characters take on the main role.Using affective input in the interaction with a game and in particular with a character is a recent and fairly unexplored dimension. This video presents a study of a tangible interaction device for affective input and its use in a role-playing game where emotions are part of the game logic

Voice-mediated text messaging service: a possiblity to enhance current text messaging service

    Get PDF
As a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) design practice, this paper first drew on several scenarios for Short-text Messaging Services (SMS) on a mobile telephone technology. And a new prototype for SMS was given to participants. While the participants were using the prototype, the initial scenarios were extended by the participants’ recognition of the new prototype, resulting in new scenarios for the future system development. This lightweight design practice was intended to educate HCI practitioners, in order to show the practicality of the HCI design process – task-artefact cycle framework

Purpose: The purpose of this professional paper is to explore and identify the best practices in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) applications and use within the hospitality industry. Statement of Objectives: To accomplish the stated purpose, first, the paper will provide the universal definition of HCI applications and define HCI within the context of hospitality industry. Second, the paper will gather and categorize information, such as the standards of designing HCI applications, from other fields of study such as informatics. Third, the paper will gather existing examples of HCI applications across different areas within the hospitality industry, such as the front desk and housekeeping department of a hotel. Finally, a set of recommendations will be given as a guide for managers of hospitality operations when purchasing a new technology or application that interact with their guests or employees
